RALEIGH--The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has purchased 608 "Trunk Packs" to install in the trunks of Troopers' Patrol vehicles. The Trunk Pack is designed to prevent objects carried in the trunks of the patrol cars from penetrating into the fuel tank. The Trunk Pack is a composite plastic organizer that has Kevlar material applied to the outside of the organizer, on the fuel tank side, and sits in the well of the trunk.
"Troopers operate out of their patrol vehicles, it is their office," said Colonel Richard W. Holden, Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. "We believe the Trunk Pack will add another level of protection for our Troopers as they perform their duties on the state's highways."
State Troopers carry a variety of items made of metal in the trunks of the Patrol vehicles, i.e. fire extinguishers, road flares, tire tools, and first aid kits. These objects could penetrate the fuel tank and cause a fire in the event the vehicle was involved in a high speed rear end collision.
This device provides additional assurance to the officers and the public that all is being done to improve workplace safety.
Each Trunk Pack costs $201.56. The Patrol plans to have all of the Trunk Packs installed by mid-August.
