GREENSBORO - Charges are still pending in the collision that took the lives of three motorcyclists on U.S. 64 about two miles west of Asheboro around 2 p.m. yesterday. Paul Franklin Fuller Jr., known to listeners of country radio station WTQR (104.1) as "Big Paul Franklin," died in the wreck. He was riding a motorcycle with his wife Susan, who was taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. They were riding motorcycles with two other couples when the crash occurred. Also killed in the collision were Thomas Richard Temples and his wife, Isolda, both of Winston Salem. The driver and passenger of the third motorcycle, Todd Stanley Carter of King and passenger Kelly Wilson of Winston Salem, were treated and released at a Randolph County hospital.
After a preliminary investigation, Troopers have determined how the accident happened. A Plymouth Sundance driven by Michael Jefferson Hanes of Asheboro, traveling west on U.S. 64, was stopped and waiting to turn left onto Stutts Road when it was struck from behind by another vehicle. A Ford Windstar Van driven by Laura Mae Dayton of Trinity knocked the Plymouth into the path of the three motorcycles, which were traveling east on U.S. 64. Neither driver in the automobiles was seriously injured.
Sgt. Mark Ivey and Trooper Martin E. Brown anticipate the investigation will not be concluded until next week.
