STATE TROOPER RECEIVES HEROISM AWARD

FAYETTEVILLE -State Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Williams today received the N. C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety's Heroism Award in a ceremony in Fayetteville.

"The department's highest award for bravery is given only to those who have risked their lives in an attempt to save others," said Bryan E. Beatty, secretary of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.

On January 9, 2001, Trooper Williams stopped Travis Freeman for speeding on NC 53. Trooper J. H. Duncan stopped to assist Trooper Williams. When both Troopers began searching Freeman's vehicle, Freeman jumped out of the Patrol car, got into his own vehicle and sped off.

During the chase that followed, Trooper Duncan's Patrol car wrecked and caught fire. Trooper Williams made every effort possible to rescue Trooper Duncan, but was unsuccessful.

"We recognize Chris Williams for his unselfish and heroic attempt to save a fellow law enforcement officer," said Colonel Richard W. Holden, commander of the State Highway Patrol.

As a recipient of the Crime Control and Public Safety Heroism Award, Trooper William's name will be added to a plaque in the Department's reception area that lists the names of the recipients of this prestigious award.

Williams has been with the NC Highway Patrol for five years and is stationed in Fayetteville.
