TRUCK DRIVER CHARGED IN FATAL WRECK


FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS SET FOR NC STATE TROOPER



RALEIGH - The North Carolina Highway Patrol, after conferring with the District Attorney, today charged Douglas Eugene Priar, age 50, of Atlanta, GA, in the fatal wreck that killed N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Calvin Taylor and another motorist on Wednesday.

Priar was charged with two counts of Misdemeanor Death By Motor Vehicle and one charge of Reckless Driving. He was released after posting a $5,000 secured bond.

The crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. yesterday along the westbound travel lanes of I-40 in Haywood County. Priar's tractor-trailer truck ran off the travel lane and struck Trooper Taylor's car and two other vehicles that were stopped on the shoulder.

Cheryl Joan Adams, age 52, of Waynesville, N.C. and Largo, FL, and Trooper Taylor were killed. Priar, and Thomas Robert Andary, age 41, of Norfolk, VA, were taken to Haywood Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries and were later released.

Funeral arrangements have been set for Trooper Taylor. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home on U.S. 19 in Canton.

The funeral service will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stuart Auditorium in Lake Junaluska.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Trooper Giles Arthur Harmon Memorial Scholarship Fund, SouthTrust Bank, PO Box 472, Brevard, N.C., 28712.
