RALEIGH -- The North Carolina National Guard's Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy, an intense in-residence education program for at-risk 16- to 18-year-old high school dropouts which operates on a campus in Salemburg, may soon open a second campus in the Triangle.
Officials with ChalleNGe, along with Durham city and county government, school and local court representatives, will announce they have begun exploring such an expansion during a graduation ceremony for 104 ChalleNGe students Friday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. in Clinton. The ceremony will take place at the Sampson County Agri-Expo Center, 414 Warsaw Road. The media is invited to attend.
The proposed second campus would be located in Butner, and serve the Triangle and surrounding counties.
Funded with state and federal dollars, Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy is a highly-regimented, five-month program that focuses on academic skills students need to obtain a General Equivalency Diploma. A year-long mentorship period follows successful graduation. Since its inception in 1994, Tarheel ChalleNGe has graduated more than 1,300 students. In this Friday's class of 104, 17 graduates have decided to enlist in either the National Guard or the active-duty U.S. Army.
Other announcements set for Friday's ceremony include the formation of a partnership between Job Corps in Raleigh and the Tarheel ChalleNGe program. In addition, ChalleNGe will announce the formation of a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) unit made up of ChalleNGe students, the first ChalleNGe program in the country to have such a unit. The CAP is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force made up of civilian volunteers who provide search and rescue services. In North Carolina, the CAP and the National Guard are part of the state Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
