GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS AT AIRPORTS
RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley announced today that additional North Carolina National Guard soldiers will be deployed to the state's 12 commercial airports by the end of this week. The additional troops will provide an added security presence throughout the holiday season over the next 45-60 days.
This announcement is not related to this morning's plane crash in New York. "We are stepping up our efforts to make absolutely certain that our airports are secure and our citizens' air travel is safe," Easley said. "I want to assure all citizens that North Carolina has made their safety our number one priority. We are prepared to take any step necessary to protect our people."
Easley activated the National Guard on Sept. 11 and deployed troops to the airports shortly after. Today's announcement brings the number of troops stationed at the airports to 140. The troops are assisting with passenger and baggage screening, perimeter patrol, vehicle security and curbside activity, among other duties.
Members of the Guard are currently stationed at the following 12 airports: Albert J. Ellis Airport (Richlands), Asheville Regional Airport, Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, Craven County Regional Airport, Fayetteville Regional Airport, Hickory Regional Airport, Kinston Regional Jetport, Moore County Airport, Piedmont Triad International Airport, Pitt-Greenville Airport, Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and Wilmington International Airport.
