| INTERFAITH AND INTERSTATE GIFT HEADED TO FLOODED CHURCHES |
SILOAM--Thirty thousand dollars' worth of oak church pews arrived at Hardy Brothers Trucking in Siloam today. The 32 pews are on their way from Emanuel Congregation Synagogue in Chicago to Grifton, NC, and will be installed in houses of worship that were damaged by Hurricane Floyd. Hardy Brothers Trucking donated a truck and driver to transport the gift of pews nearly 1,000 miles.
"I am glad that we have this opportunity to help people who have lost everything in Hurricane Floyd," said Eddie Hardy, president of Hardy Brothers Trucking. "I encourage all of my neighbors in Surry County and the Triad to reach out to flood victims."
The 32 pews donated today are only a small part of what is needed. Approximately 400 pews have been requested through the nondenominational Church2Church program. This effort of the N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety helps damaged houses of worship get assistance by pairing them with houses of worship throughout North Carolina and the country.
"Places of worship are important to all North Carolinians," said Jon Williams, Church2Church project director. "Work crews from across North Carolina are helping restore the damaged buildings; however, one of the greatest needs that remain is seating."
If any churches in the Triad area have extra pews to donate, they are encouraged to call Church2Church toll free at 1-888-595-1459.
