SECRETARY BEATTY NAMES RUDISILL DEPUTY SECRETARY OF CCPS |
RALEIGH - Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Bryan E. Beatty named Major General Gerald A. Rudisill, Jr. as the new deputy secretary of the department, effective Sept. 22. He replaces Billy Ray Cameron who retired July 31.
Rudisill was the adjutant general of the N.C. National Guard from 1993 to 2001 before he was assigned to the Pentagon in Washington D.C. as primary advisor to the chairman and the Joint Chiefs of Staff on National Guard matters.
As deputy secretary, Rudisill will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the Division of Emergency Management, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Law Enforcement Support Services, and the Civil Air Patrol.
"General Rudisill is well familiar with the workings of Emergency Management, having successfully responded to hurricanes Emily, Fran, Floyd and Dennis along with many other emergencies while he was adjutant general of the National Guard." Beatty said. "He is an exceptional leader in military and civilian affairs, making him the right man for the job in light of the terrorism issues and dealing with Homeland Security. I cannot say how pleased I am to have him working for the state again."
A Charlotte native, Rudisill, graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in political science in 1966. Shortly thereafter, he joined the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant and served in Vietnam where he attained the rank of 1st lieutenant. Upon completion of active duty in July 1968, Rudisill began his service with the Army National Guard, receiving his first promotion to the rank of captain in 1970.
Rudisill, who has had extensive sales and operational management experience in the health care field, was a regional manager for APRIA Healthcare from 1988 until 1993. In 1993, Rudisill was named adjutant general of the N.C. National Guard and was responsible for commanding the 10,000 members of the Army National Guard and the 1,500 members of the Air National Guard.
Rudisill has received numerous awards and decorations including the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and Legion of Merit.
Rudisill and his wife, Sue, have one child, Brian.
