A Butner Public Safety Day will be held Saturday, October 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Central Ave.gazebo in Butner.
The Butner Public Safety staff, a division of Crime Control and Public Safety, organized the event to provide the community with practical crime prevention and fire safety tips. A fire prevention trailer will be set up for children to learn how to escape from a burning dwelling, golf carts will simulate driving while impaired, and display booths from law enforcement, fire and emergency response agencies will demonstrate practical tips on holiday safety.
“These are year-round tips, but particularly with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching, this seemed to be the best time to hold this event for the community,” said Rufus Sales, director of Butner Public Safety. “This is our way of giving back to the community.”
Fourteen local and state agencies are participating in the event. The South Granville Exchange Club is providing the funds for food and beverages for the public.Butner, home to a number of state and federal institutions and private industries, is the only state-run community in North Carolina. It straddles the Durham and Granville county lines.

Directions: Take exit 182 off of I-85. If you are traveling north, turn right, if south, turn left. The road is named Gate Two and turns into Central Avenue. Cross the railroad tracks, go through the stoplight. When you see the State Employees Credit Union on the left, the gazebo will be on the right.
From Raleigh: Take Highway 50 (Creedmoor Road) to Highway 56. When you get to Butner, take a right on Central Avenue. Cross the railroad tracks, go through the stoplight. When you see the State Employees Credit Union on the left, the gazebo will be on the right.
