ALE AGENTS ARREST 90 IN TRIANGLE AREA UNDERAGE DRINKING CRACKDOWN |
RALEIGH - Some college students and other minors got a wake-up call over the weekend when Alcohol Law Enforcement Agents made 90 arrests in the Triangle area during a back-to-school enforcement campaign.
ALE agents worked at ABC licensed establishments around Duke University in Durham, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and N.C. State University in Raleigh.
"ALE agents checked ABC licensed establishments to ensure that alcohol was not being sold to underage college students as they arrived for the fall semester," said ALE Director Michael Robertson. "Incoming freshman need to know that underage drinking will be strictly enforced according to North Carolina law."
In Raleigh, 41 arrests were made for underage possession of alcohol, fake IDs, and after-hours consumption. Two ABC licensed establishments were found in violation of the law, Crowley's Old Favorites restaurant on Medlin Drive was cited for allowing eight minors to consume alcoholic beverages, and Hi-5, a restaurant on Glenwood Ave. was cited for after-hours consumption.
In Durham, 30 arrests were made. In Chapel Hill, 21 arrests were made. One business in Carrboro, the Crown Fast Fare on Main Street, was cited for selling to an intoxicated person and selling after-hours.
Businesses are not allowed to sell alcohol to anyone under 21-years of age, and it is illegal for anyone 21-years and younger to consume alcohol. ALE is planning additional enforcement operations in the near future.
ALE, a Division of the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, is charged by the General Statutes with enforcing alcoholic beverage control and drug laws. The division puts special emphasis on the possession and use of alcohol by underage persons, and the prevention of violent crime due to alcohol and drug abuse.
