ALE OPERATION FOCUSES ON COLLEGE STUDENTS' ACCESS TO ALCOHOL
|
GREENSBORO - ALE agents conducted a back-to-school enforcement campaign over the weekend, charging 61 people in Guilford and Alamance counties with alcohol violations. Those charged included store clerks who sold alcohol to underage people and minors who tried to purchase alcohol or use a fake ID.
In the Greensboro area, 20 ABC licensed businesses were checked and ALE agents charged five with selling alcohol to an 18-year-old undercover agent. In Alamance County, 48 businesses were checked, and 26 sold to an underage ALE agent. Businesses are not allowed to sell alcohol to anyone under 21-years of age, and it is illegal for anyone 21-years and younger to purchase or consume alcohol.
On Saturday evening at Elon College, undercover ALE officers posed as store employees and charged 30 underage persons with trying to purchase alcohol or use fake ID's. ALE agents also cited two businesses for selling alcohol to underage patrons, The Pit Stop #9, 2583 S. Church Street, Burlington was charged both Friday and Saturday nights with selling alcohol to an 18-year-old. On Saturday night, Fairway One Stop #21 was charged with selling to a minor.
"We will continue to perform undercover operations, particularly in Alamance County where we discovered a high number of violations," said Rodney Johnson, district supervisor for the Greensboro ALE office. "For the safety of all citizens, ALE agents will continue to enforce the state's alcohol laws, particularly in college areas where most underage violations occur."
