FOUR GRADUATE FROM ALCOHOL LAW ENFORCEMENT BASIC SCHOOL

RALEIGH-After five weeks of vigorous training, four new agents graduated Sept. 23 from the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division (A.L.E.) training school.

Receiving their A.L.E. badges were Gary S. Young of Rocky Mount, assigned to, Raleigh; Jonathan C. Dudley of Davidson and Michael P. Tobin of Charlotte, both assigned to Charlotte; and Ronnie N. Dorn of Jacksonville, assigned to Wilmington.

The agent's new duties will include enforcing state alcohol and tobacco laws such as sales to minors, and the prevention of violent crime due to alcohol and drug abuse. Agents also participate in alcohol education programs for high school students to alert teens to the possible consequences of drinking and driving.

"The State of North Carolina is very proud of the N.C. Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement and its newest agents," said Bryan E. Beatty, secretary of the N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety (CC&PS). "These agents excelled during the basic training, and I know they will continue to do their best to serve North Carolina's citizens." Beatty said.

Last year, the state's 107 A.L.E. officers made 7,849 arrests, more than half related to alcohol, 12 % to tobacco, 13% to controlled substances, and 6% for fictitious IDs. In addition to their law enforcement duties, agents conduct inspections of all locations holding ABC permits and investigate any complaints received concerning the operation of these establishments.

The four new agents graduated from the 17th A.L.E. Basic School held in Salemburg. Their training studies included ABC laws and regulations, firearms, CPR, defensive tactics, controlled substances, officer survival, and defensive driving techniques.

"Our agents are some of the best in law enforcement," said John J. Simmons, Sr., acting director of A.L.E. "Both the academic and practical training that these graduates received is extensive and will serve them well as they take on their new duties."
