RE: “Operation Cody” Highway Patrol Crackdown on Aggressive Driving on I-40

The Highway Patrol will be conducting a speed enforcement campaign during July 1-13 on I-40 to combat aggressive driving. Troopers and members of the Patrol’s Motor Carrier Enforcement Section from the surrounding area will converge on Interstates 40 from Asheville to the Tennessee state line.

The purpose of this special emphasis is to crack down on aggressive drivers, and enforce the traffic laws of the state with zero tolerance for dangerous driving. I-40 is typically one of the heaviest traveled corridors in North Carolina. The Highway Patrol’s Camaros and Aviation Unit are being used because of their low visibility. The Camaros are equipped with dual antenna radars that have the ability to clock vehicles as they approach the Trooper. The SHP helicopter flies above the highway and radios violations to troopers on the ground.

A Child Safety Seat Checkpoint will be held on Saturday, 12 July 2003 at Ken Wilson Ford located off I-40 at exit 31 in Canton from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Certified Passenger Safety Seat Technicians will be on hand during this time to inspect and properly install child safety seats, free of charge.

Cody is the three year old son of Trooper Anthony Cogdill who was killed on May 30th while conducting a traffic stop on I-40 in Haywood County.
