RE: Highway Patrol Interstate Crackdown Results on NC-17

Highway Patrol Troopers charged drivers with 615 violations during a four-day speed reduction campaign on Interstate 77 in Mecklenburg County. Here is a breakdown of the charges outside of the Construction Zone:


  • 111 speeding
  • 5 careless and reckless driving
  • 1 child restraint violation
  • 40 seatbelt violations
  • 23 following too close
  • 80 other

Here is the breakdown of charges inside the construction zone:

  • 155 speeding
  • 2 careless and reckless driving
  • 39 seatbelt violations
  • 45 following to close
  • 1 driving while impaired
  • 113 other

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one-third of personal injury collisions and two-thirds of highway deaths are associated with aggressive driving. The purpose of the Highway Patrol's special enforcement effort is to crack down on aggressive drivers in order to reduce collisions. The Patrol will conduct additional special enforcement campaigns in the future.
