RE: Statewide Kick-Off: Highway Patrol to Crack Down on Aggressive Driving on the Interstates

On July 18, 2002, the Highway Patrol will begin conducting a speed reduction campaign on sections of I-40/I-85 to combat aggressive driving. This will be the first of several speed reduction campaigns on the interstate system. Troopers from surrounding counties will converge on these interstates focusing on the true aggressive driver. The aggressive driver has been identified as those drivers who flagrantly violate the motor vehicle laws, including but not limited to: excessive speeding, following too closely, erratic lane changes, safe movement violations, and other forms of reckless endangerment. Aggressive drivers account for the majority of the traffic collisions that occur on the state roadways. The first squad of troopers will work I-40/I-85 in the following counties: Wake, Durham, Johnston, Granville, Vance, and Warren. The second squad of troopers will work these counties: Orange, Guilford, Alamance, and Randolph. Troopers will be using Camaros, unmarked patrol vehicles, motorcycles, and helicopter units for these campaigns.

On Thursday, July 18th at 10:00 a.m., members of the media are invited to the kick-off event which will be held at the Entertainment Sports Arena, Edwards Mill Extension, Raleigh. Colonel Richard W. Holden, Commander of the N.C. State Highway Patrol, will brief troopers on their assignments and address questions from the media. The briefing for the Triad area troopers and media will be conducted at the Troop-D Patrol office, 2527 East Market Street, Greensboro, N.C.
