RE: Highway Patrol to Crackdown on Aggressive Driving on Interstate 95

On August 16, 2002, the N.C. Highway Patrol will conduct a speed reduction campaign on Interstate 95 to combat aggressive driving. This will be a continuation of the speed reduction campaigns on the interstate systems throughout the state that began in July.

Troopers from surrounding counties will converge on I-95 focusing on the true aggressive driver. The aggressive driver has been identified as those drivers who flagrantly violate the motor vehicle laws, including but not limited to: excessive speeding, following too closely, erratic lane changes, safe movement violations, and other forms of reckless endangerment. Aggressive drivers account for the majority of the traffic collisions that occur on the state roadways.

Troopers will work I-95 from the South Carolina to the Virginia State lines. The Virginia State Police will also be conducting the crackdown on I-95 in their state. Troopers in North Carolina will be using Camaros, unmarked patrol vehicles, motorcycles, and helicopter units for this campaign.

For additional information or to arrange coverage of the enforcement effort, contact the Traffic Safety Information Officer for your area, or call the CCPS Public Affairs Office at 919-733-5027.
