Student Trooper Program 2001

The American Legion and North Carolina Highway Patrol kicked off the eighth annual Student Trooper program on June 24 at the Highway Patrol Training Academy in Raleigh.

The week-long program was created to foster understanding between young people and law enforcement officers. Many of the students have expressed an interest in criminal justice careers.

The rising high school seniors will learn about the criminal justice system and participate in physical training while living at the Training Academy. They also will receive instruction on first aid, speed monitoring, drunk and drugged driving enforcement and prevention, firearm safety, precision driving, and accident investigation.

The Student Trooper Program staff is composed of members of the American Legion and the Highway Patrol Training Center staff. Past student troopers serve as junior counselors.

To qualify for admission to the program, students must be of good moral character and demonstrate qualities of patriotism and leadership. Any American Legion Post in North Carolina may sponsor a student by raising the $160 tuition fee and assuming responsibility for attendance and transportation.

I encourage you to cover this "good news" feature story at any time during the week. If there are any questions, please contact Mr. Frank Stancil at the SHP Training Academy (919) 662-4430. The graduation ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday on the front lawn of the Training Center.
