State Highway Patrol Christmas Memorial Service |
|
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol will hold its annual Christmas Memorial Service tomorrow night to honor those members killed in the line of duty. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 4, at 6 p.m., at the Highway Patrol Memorial on the grounds of the SHP Academy, 3318 Garner Road, Raleigh. The cadets of the 105th Academy will conduct the one-hour service. The guest speaker will be Secretary Bryan E. Beatty of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. Again this year the cadets of the Basic Academy will honor the 53 members of the State Highway Patrol who have died in the line of duty since 1929 with the "recognition of lights." As each deceased member's name is called, a Patrol cadet will turn on his car's blue lights until the lights of all 53 are lit. The Patrol family lost two members in the line of duty in 2001, Trooper John Duncan of Cumberland County and Trooper Calvin Taylor of Haywood County. You are invited to attend and cover these ceremonies. If you have any questions, please contact my office at (919) 733-5027. |
