Rhonda G. Raney, Assistant Secretary

Rhonday G. RhaneyRhonda G. Raney was named deputy secretary of the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety in October 2009.  Prior to this appointment, Mrs. Raney was assistant secretary since October 2007.

Mrs. Rhaney oversees the operations of the Governor's Crime Commission, Law Enforcement Support services and Victims' Compensation Services.

Mrs. Raney earned her Bachelor's degree in sociology from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. She completed graduate work in education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and graduated from law school at the College of William and Mary.    

She began her professional career practicing law in Daytona Beach, FL. After moving to North Carolina in 1992, she served in several deputy-level public and private posts including work at the North Carolina Bar Association and the NC Justice Center. She has been a registered lobbyist with the North Carolina General Assembly and has an extensive background in public policy.

Raney originally joined the department in 1999 as deputy director for the Governor's Crime Commission, a position she held until 2002.

Mrs. Raney serves on various community boards, committees and is a member of various professional organizations including the Florida Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Association of Realtors. She also serves on the NC Committee of the United States Civil Rights Commission.
