An all terrain vehicle (ATV) is a motor vehicle with two or more wheels fitted with large tires for off-road use.  It is primarily manufactured for recreational use on rugged terrain. An ATV should never be driven on the roadways.  It is a violation of the law and could result in arrest.  Drivers and any passengers should wear helmets.  Children under the age of 16 should be supervised by an adult.

Because of the growing popularity of ATVs in North Carolina, trespassing and theft involving these vehicles are on the rise.  Safeguard your ATV by recording the serial number, taking a photograph of it, and checking with a local law enforcement agency for a registration program. Keep your ATV locked or in a secure area.  If your ATV is stolen or missing, report it to your local law enforcement agency immediately.  Anyone caught in possession of stolen property with a value of more than $1,000 could be charged with a Class H Felony (leading to jail time). If the driver of an ATV damages or destroys public or private property, damages any trees, crops, or lands belonging to another person, or trespasses on state-owned land without the permission of the state, he or she could be charged with a Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor.  The driver could also be fined for the repair of damaged property or land.
