ALE AGENTS ARREST WILKESBORO MAN FOR MOONSHINE
Seizure is One of the Largest in Western N.C.

RALEIGH – N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement agents seized 929 gallons of moonshine and arrested a Wilkesboro man Oct. 7 for the alleged possession of non-tax paid liquor.

Roger Lee Nance of 1117 Shew Ridge Mission Road, Wilkesboro, was charged with, possession of non-tax paid liquor, possession of non-tax paid liquor for the purpose of sell and possession of equipment and ingredients intended for the use in the manufacture of an alcoholic beverage.

“This is one of the biggest seizures of white liquor I've seen come out of the mountains in my career,” ALE Director John Ledford said. “I commend the agents who were able to make this arrest. While tax-paid liquor is regulated and inspected, illegal distilleries are typically made in unhealthy conditions that could possibly cause exposure to lead and other problems.”

The arrest follows a two-month investigation by ALE agents with assistance from the State Highway Patrol. Deputies from the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office assisted in executing the search warrant Wednesday. In addition to the liquor, large amounts of sugar and other items were seized during a search of the property.
