Reuben Young, secretary of the N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety (CC&PS), and Colonel Walter J. Wilson, Jr., Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will present Trooper J. R. Sharlow with the Department's Commendation Award and the Highway Patrol's Samaritan Award in a ceremony on Wednesday, Feb 18th at 1:15 p.m. at Greensboro Public Safety Training Facility in Greensboro.
“Trooper Sharlow's actions made a difference on August 27, 2008, when he assisted a man by pulling him out from underneath a vehicle and administering first aid at a crash scene on I-85 in Alamance County,” said Young. “He is to be commended for his actions.”
Trooper Sharlow pulled a man out from underneath the vehicle and moved him to a safe location and began to administer first aid. He noticed the man was not breathing properly; he opened his airway and continued to administer first aid and provided comfort until EMS arrived. The quick response and life-saving actions that Trooper Sharlow exhibited undoubtedly saved Mr. Riley's life.
“Trooper Sharlow demonstrated good judgment by helping a man trapped under a vehicle. This level of service exemplifies what it means to be a State Trooper—to serve others,” said Colonel Walter J. Wilson, Jr., Highway Patrol Commander.
The Commendation Award is the Department's second highest award for heroism. The Commendation Award is presented to employees who prevent injury or death because of their actions.
