Trooper Dies Following On-Duty Injury
Trooper Kyle P. Barber, age 46, died yesterday at Wake Forest University Hospital in Winston Salem following a medical procedure related to an
on-duty injury that occurred in January 2007. Trooper Barber joined the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in May, 1985. His most recent assignment was Wilkesboro.
On Jan 20, 2007, Trooper Barber was assisting another trooper that had stopped an all-terrain vehicle on a rural road in Wilkes County. The
all-terrain vehicle rolled striking Trooper Barber and pinned him against his patrol car. He sustained major injuries to his lower legs. Trooper Barber has received numerous medical treatments, including 10 surgical procedures.
Commander Walter J. Wilson said, “My thoughts and prayers are extended to Trooper Barber's family. The patrol is feeling the loss of one of our own, one who lost his life serving the citizens of the state.”
Trooper Barber is the 61st trooper to die in the line of duty since the formation of the Highway Patrol in 1929.
Trooper Barber grew up in Glens Fall, New York, where he graduated from Queensbury High School in 1980. He leaves behind a wife, Lynn Barber, and three children. If you have further questions, please call Captain Everett Clendenin at 919-733-5027.
