State Highway Patrol Employees Receive Awards During Ceremony in Fayetteville

 

Secretary Rueben F. Young of the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety (CCPS), and Colonel Randy Glover, Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, will present Troopers R.B. Battle, A.B. Duff, D.S. Gould, J.K. Locklear and Telecommunicator F.L. Ledwell with awards from the department and the Highway Patrol in a ceremony today at
10 a.m.

 “Each of these employees is to be commended on their actions and contributions to the citizens of the state of North Carolina and to our department,” said Young.

Recipient and Award:

Trooper R. B. Battle - will receive the CCPS Heroism Award and Highway Patrol Award of Valor. Trooper Battle entered a burning home in an attempt to prevent loss of life.

 Trooper A. S. Duff - will receive CCPS Commendation Award and Highway Patrol Samaritan Award. Trooper Duff, who was off-duty, assisted in the apprehension of a drive-by shooting suspect which occurred in Wallace.

 Trooper D. S. Gould - will receive the CCPS Commendation Award and Highway Patrol Samaritan Award. Trooper Gould attempted to perform life-saving CPR on an unresponsive woman located at a residence in Burgaw.

Trooper J. K. Locklear - will receive the CCPS Commendation Award and Highway Patrol Samaritan Award. Trooper Locklear located an unresponsive woman at her residence after she was involved in a motor vehicle collision and provided life-saving care until medical personnel arrived.

Patrol Telecommunicator F. L. Ledwell - will receive the CCPS Commendation Award and Highway Patrol Samaritan Award. Ledwell assisted in locating an overdue driver. The unconscious driver was found in the cab of his truck near Columbia, N. J.

 “Each Trooper went beyond the normal call of duty, and demonstrated outstanding judgment,” said Col. Glover. “This level of service exemplifies what it means to be a state employee - to serve others.”

The Highway Patrol will recognize a member of the public, David H. Campbell, by presenting the Citizen Life Saving Award for his willingness to assist a patrol member in a time of need.

The Commendation Award is CCPS's second highest award for heroism and is given only to those who have demonstrated judgment and courage that saved others. The Meritorious Award is CCPS's second highest award for meritorious service or achievement. The Award of Valor is given by the Patrol to a member who displayed personal bravery and self-sacrifice while engaged in the preservation of life or property. The Meritorious Award is given by the Patrol to a member who serves the state of North Carolina in an outstanding manner. The Samaritan Award is given an award bestowed to a member of the Patrol who went beyond the call of duty to aid or assist a fellow citizen.
