State Troopers Receive Award

Reuben Young, secretary of the N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety (CC&PS), and Colonel Walter J. Wilson, Jr., Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will present Trooper Fred Demuth with the Department's Heroism Award and Trooper Leonard McLeod with the Meritorious Service Award in a ceremony on Wednesday, February 25th at 1:15 p.m. at Troop C Headquarters in Raleigh.

“These troopers' actions made the difference in people's lives,” said Young. “These troopers are to be commended for their actions.”

On August 27, 2008, Trooper Demuth assisted two people in separate homes that were engulfed in flames in Tarboro. He assisted with rescuing occupants in both homes. His actions saved the life of one of the residents.

Trooper McLeod created a commercial motor vehicle safety program that promotes truck safety to members of the trucking community. He presented the program to hundreds of citizens last year.

“Trooper Demuth went above and beyond the normal call of duty on this occasion in an attempt to possibly save others. This level of service exemplifies what it means to be a State Trooper—to serve others,” said Colonel Walter J. Wilson, Jr., Highway Patrol Commander.

The Heroism Award is the Department's highest award for heroism and is presented to employees who risk their lives to help others. The Meritorious Service Award is presented to employees who serve the Highway Patrol in an outstanding manner.

Editor's Note: The award ceremony will be held Wednesday, February 25th at 1:15 p.m. at Troop C Headquarters, 1831 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh. You are invited to attend and cover the story.
