STATE HIGHWAY PATROL EMPLOYEES RECEIVE DEPARTMENTAL AWARDS

ASHEVILLE – Deputy Secretary Jonathan S. Williams of the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety (CCPS), and Colonel Randy Glover, Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, will present Troopers J. M. Burnette, C. B. Dotson and M. L. Stephens with awards from the department and the Highway Patrol in a ceremony today at 12 p.m.

“Each of these employees is to be commended on their actions and contributions to the citizens of the state of North Carolina and to our department,” said Williams.

Recipient and Award:

· Trooper J. M. Brunette - will receive the CCPS Commendation Award and the Highway Patrol Samaritan Award. Trooper Brunette assisted a motorist who was unresponsive and not breathing. Trooper Brunette performed CPR which ultimately saved the motorists life.

· Trooper C. B. Dotson - will receive CCPS Commendation Award and the Highway Patrol Samaritan Award. Trooper Dotson responded to a call in which a person was threatening suicide in Swannanoa. Trooper Dotson was able to prevent the person from harming herself.

· Trooper M. L. Stephens - will receive the CCPS Commendation Award and the Highway Patrol Samaritan Award. Trooper Stephens responded to a call in Jackson County that involved a child being attacked by a dog. Trooper Stephens located the child and was able to prevent the dog from causing further injury.

“Each Trooper went beyond the normal call of duty, and demonstrated outstanding judgment,” said Col. Glover. “This level of service exemplifies what it means to be a state employee - to serve others.”

The Commendation Award is CCPS's second highest award for heroism and is given only to those who have demonstrated judgment and courage that saved others. The Samaritan Award is given an award bestowed to a member of the Patrol who went beyond the call of duty to aid or assist a fellow citizen.

Editor's Note: The award ceremony will be held Thursday, Sept 17, 12 p.m., at Grand Bohemian Hotel, 11 Boston Way, Asheville. You are invited to attend and cover the story.
