State Trooper Receives Award
RALEIGH— Bryan E. Beatty, secretary of the N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety (CC&PS), will present Trooper J. L. Thorpe with the Department's Commendation and Samaritan Awards in a ceremony on Tuesday, May 6th at Troop C Headquarters in Raleigh.
“Trooper Thorpe's actions made a difference on January 23rd when he rendered aid to a citizen in Clayton,” said Beatty. “He is to be commended for his life saving actions.”
On January 23rd, Trooper Thorpe witnessed a traffic collision while he was patrolling in Clayton. He ran to the vehicle involved in the collision and checked on the status of the driver. The driver was unconscious and not breathing. Trooper Thorpe began CPR on the lady operating the vehicle and continued to assist her until EMS arrived.
“Trooper Thorpe went above and beyond the normal call of duty on this occasion in an attempt to possibly save others. This level of service exemplifies what it means to be a State Trooper—to serve others,” said Colonel W. Fletcher Clay, Highway Patrol Commander.
The Commendation Award is the Department's second highest award for heroism. The Samaritan Award is presented to employees who go beyond the normal call of duty to help others.
Editor's Note: The award ceremony will be held Tuesday, May 6th at 10:00 a.m. at Troop C Headquarters, 1831 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh. You are invited to attend and cover the story.
