TWO STATE TROOPERS RECEIVE AWARDS
MARION— Bryan E. Beatty, secretary of the N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety (CC&PS), will present Trooper R. M. Lancaster and Trooper J. E. Dowdle with the Department's Commendation and Samaritan Awards in a ceremony on Monday, May 5th in Marion.
“Trooper Lancaster's and Trooper Dowdle's actions, made a difference in the lives of two people,” said Beatty. “They are to be commended for their life saving actions.”
On February 8, 2008, Trooper Dowdle responded to a call for assistance from a lady with an unresponsive infant. Trooper Lancaster arrived on the scene and immediately began rescue breathing and continued to treat the infant until EMS arrived.
On January 20, 2008, Trooper Lancaster was assisting another trooper on a vehicle stop when he noticed a man slumped over in the back seat of the vehicle. The man had slow aspirations and was unresponsive. Trooper Lancaster began life saving actions and continued to treat him until EMS arrived.
“These Troopers went above and beyond the normal call of duty on these occasions in an attempt to possibly save others. This level of service exemplifies what it means to be a State Trooper—to serve others,” said Colonel W. Fletcher Clay, Highway Patrol Commander.
The Commendation Award is the Department's second highest award for heroism. The Samaritan Award is presented to employees who go beyond the normal call of duty to help others.
Editor's Note: The award ceremony will be held Monday, May 5th at 11:00 a.m. at the Marion Police Department, 270 Main Street, Marion. You are invited to attend and cover the story.
