Chandler Named New Director for
Alcohol Law Enforcement

Raleigh – Secretary Bryan Beatty today announced William Chandler has been appointed as the new director for the Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) Division of the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. The 27-year veteran of ALE begins his new position November 1st succeeding Mike Robertson, who retired at the end of October.

“As a career ALE agent, I could think of no one better suited to lead the division,” said Beatty. “Because of his years working with officers all over North Carolina, Bill is well respected in the law enforcement community. He will be an outstanding leader for our dedicated agents.”

As director, Chandler is charged with enforcing the regulation of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and lottery tickets in North Carolina. The division polices more than 17,000 outlets that sell alcohol and tobacco and more than 5,000 lottery ticket outlets.

Chandler joined ALE as one of the agency's original field agents 27 years ago after completing the first basic school designed specifically for alcohol law enforcement officers.  Since then, he has completed additional training in the investigation of narcotics, financial crimes, money laundering and interview and interrogation techniques. During his tenure with the division, he has worked in numerous capacities including as a field agent, district supervisor, training coordinator and assistant director. For the past four years, he has served as the division's deputy director.

Bill earned his Bachelor Degree in Political Science, as well as his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Public Administration, from North Carolina State University. He also has taught several masters level public policy courses at the university.

The Alcohol Law Enforcement Division is comprised of 141 employees, including 117 sworn law enforcement agents. ALE agents have statewide authority to enforce laws on the legal and illegal manufacture, sale, consumption, distribution, and transportation of alcoholic beverages, plus the state lottery laws, drugs laws and the federal and state laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco to underage persons. In addition, the division regulates boxing matches and mixed martial arts competitions and oversees the NC Center for Missing Persons, AMBER Alert and Silver Alert programs.
