Highway Patrol to Conduct Operation Drive to Live in the Triangle
During the week of December10-14, the Highway Patrol will conduct Operation Drive to Live in the Triangle. The operation is an initiative by the Highway Patrol to reduce the number of teenage related traffic collisions in the Triangle region.
Eighteen teenagers have been killed in traffic collisions in the area this year. Troopers will be enforcing all traffic laws around the state's schools and conducting traffic safety education programs at the high schools.
The operation will be conducted during school hours each day in the following counties; Wake, Wayne, Nash, Wilson, Johnston, Durham, Franklin, Chatham, Lee and Harnett.
Traffic collisions are the leading cause of teenage deaths in North Carolina and our nation. Since 2004, 526 teenagers have been killed on the state's highways. Speed is the leading cause of those collisions.
A kick-off press event announcing the initiative will be held on Monday, December 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Troop C Headquarters, located at 1831 Blue Ridge Road. First Lady Mary Easley, Bryan Beatty, Secretary of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, Colonel Fletcher Clay, Commander of the Highway Patrol, Sheriff Donnie Harrison, Wake County, Sheriff Steve Bizzell, Johnston County, Chief District Court Judge Joe Buckner, Chief Harry Dolan, Raleigh PD, and Darrell Jernigan, Director of the Governor's Highway Safety Program, will speak at the event.
