Highway Patrol to Crack Down on Aggressive Driving in Wake County
On June 20-24, 2005, the Highway Patrol will be conducting a Speed Reduction Campaign on I-40, I-440 and I-540 in Wake County to combat aggressive driving.
The campaign will be conducted between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. each day. Officers from the Highway Patrol, Raleigh Police Department and the Wake County Sheriff?s office will be participating in the campaign This will be a continuation of the speed reduction campaigns conducted by the Patrol.
The aggressive driver has been identified as those drivers who flagrantly violate the motor vehicle laws, including but not limited to excessive speeding, following too closely, erratic lane changes, safe movement violations, and other forms of reckless endangerment. Aggressive drivers account for the majority of the traffic collisions that occur on the state roadways. Troopers will be using motorcycles, Camaros, and unmarked patrol vehicles for this campaign.
Troopers will be enforcing all traffic laws; however, they will be focusing their efforts on high-speed violations. The Patrol will also be enforcing the ?Move Over? law that requires motorists to reduce their speed and move over into the lane that is not the lane nearest to an emergency vehicle. The Patrol is responding to numerous complaints received from citizens concerned about traffic violations, high-speed, and littering on these highways.
The media is invited to the Troopers briefing that will be held 6:00 a.m. Monday June 20, 2005, at Troop C Headquarters, which is located at 1831 Blue Ridge Road, in Raleigh. For further information please call Lt. Everett Clendenin at 919-733-5027.
