Highway Patrol to Crack Down in the Five Deadliest Counties in North Carolina-Press Event in Smithfield June 27th at 10:00 AM

On June 27- July 4, 2005, the Highway Patrol will be cracking down on aggressive drivers in the five deadliest counties in North Carolina. The Highway Patrol reviewed traffic fatalities investigated by troopers in each county from the year 2000 through 2004.

The top five counties will be revealed at the press event.

The Highway Patrol will increase enforcement targeting the aggressive driver in the five counties and on the interstates and other heavily traveled corridors. The aggressive driver has been identified as those drivers who flagrantly violate the motor vehicle laws, including but not limited to: excessive speeding, following too closely, erratic lane changes, safe movement violations, and other forms of reckless endangerment.

Aggressive drivers account for the majority of the traffic collisions that occur on the state roadways. Troopers will be using motorcycles, Camaros, and unmarked patrol vehicles for this campaign.

A press event will be held on Monday, June 27, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Highway Patrol’s District office in Johnston County, 3783 US 301 South, Smithfield. Bryan Beatty, Secretary of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety and Colonel Fletcher Clay, Commander of the Highway Patrol, will speak at the event.
