Highway Patrol to Crack Down on Aggressive Driving in Union County

On August 9-13, 2004, the Highway Patrol will be conducting a Speed Reduction Campaign on US 74 and US 601 in Union County to combat aggressive driving. The campaign will be conducted between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. each day.

This will be a continuation of the speed reduction campaigns conducted by the Patrol. Troopers from surrounding counties will converge on these roadways focusing on the true aggressive driver. The aggressive driver has been identified as those drivers who flagrantly violate the motor vehicle laws, including but not limited to excessive speeding, following too closely, erratic lane changes, safe movement violations, and other forms of reckless endangerment.

Aggressive drivers account for the majority of the traffic collisions that occur on the state roadways. Troopers will be using motorcycles, Camaros, and unmarked patrol vehicles for this campaign.

Troopers will be enforcing all traffic laws; however, they will be focusing their efforts on high-speed violations. The Patrol will also be enforcing the “Move Over” law that requires motorists to reduce their speed and move over into the lane that is not the lane nearest to an emergency vehicle.

Officers from local police agencies in Union County will be participating in the project.

The media is invited to the Troopers briefing that will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 9, 2004, at Troop H Headquarters, which is located at 2206 Fowler Secrest Road, in Monroe.
