GOV. EASLEY PROCLAIMS SEPTEMBER AS “READY NORTH CAROLINA MONTH”
Residents Urged To Focus On Emergency Preparedness

RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley has proclaimed September 2004 as “Ready North Carolina Month” to remind citizens, businesses and schools to be prepared for any possible disasters, natural or man-made.

“Our state has already been visited by four tropical weather systems this year and we are just now into the busiest part of the hurricane season,” Easley said. “We need to be ready at any time for any emergency, whether it is a hurricane, an ice storm or an attack on our nation.”

North Carolina’s observance coincides with the pronouncement of September as National Preparedness Month. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety are asking citizens to be prepared, make a plan and be informed.

“For the public’s safety, I urge everyone in North Carolina to take part in this observance by assembling a three-day disaster supply kit and reviewing their family emergency plans,” Easley said. “We all need to be prepared in case a disaster occurs and have the necessary plans in place to be as self-sufficient as possible.”

As part of the month’s activities, Thursday, Sept. 9, has been proclaimed “Ready North Carolina” day.

AS OF SEPTEMBER 7, THE EVENTS PLANNED AT THE CAPITOL FOR SEPTEMBER 9 HAVE BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE FOR TROPICAL DEPRESSION FRANCES.  THE EVENT WILL BE RE-SCHEDULED LATER THIS MONTH.

A Ready North Carolina brochure concentrating on public health issues will be distributed in most state newspapers in both English and Spanish during the week of Sept. 12.

More information about emergency preparedness can be obtained from county emergency management agencies, or by logging onto www.nccrimecontrol.org/familypreparedness for North Carolina-specific information, or to www.ready.gov for information from the federal government, or by calling 1-800-BE-READY for a free brochure.
