Resources for Locating Missing Children

Child Identification Kit

When parents call authorities to report missing children, too often they cannot provide an accurate description of their missing child. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has developed a Child Identification Kit that includes:

For fingerprints to be useful, they must be properly taken by a law enforcement agency. The blood specimen, used in DNA analysis, can be taken by the child's physician.

SBI Agents work with local law enforcement agencies to provide the Child ID Kit to parents and their children at various events held throughout the State. Parents must keep the kit in a safe place and allow access only with their permission. The information remains confidential and will be turned over to law enforcement only when necessary.

LOCATOR program

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has launched LOCATER – Lost Child Alert Technology Resource -- a program to distribute advanced computer systems to create and disseminate posters of missing children locally, statewide, or nationwide.

This program is intended to hasten the recovery of missing and abducted children by providing law enforcement agencies with a free monitor, CPU, scanner and printer to assist them in investigating those cases.

To apply for the LOCATER Program, visit www.locaterposters.org/index.html or call (703) 837-6389 or 1-877-446-2632 ext. 6389.
