Floodplain Mapping
In 1999, Hurricane Floyd flooded thousands of square miles of eastern North Carolina and left thousands of people homeless. This disaster highlighted North Carolina's vulnerability to natural disasters and the need for accurate, up-to-date floodplain maps for safer floodplain development standards.
In September, 2000, North Carolina, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, began remapping the state?s floodplains using advanced digital floodpain mapping technology.
When the maps are ready, a preliminary meeting is held for county and municipal officials, congressional and legislative members. Then a public meeting follows where residents can see the new maps.
So far, 29 counties have received new flood insurance rate maps: Beaufort, Bladen Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Green, Halifax, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenior, Nash, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Person, Pitt, Robeson, Tyrell, Warren, Washington, Wayne and Wilson.
