Butner Public Safety

Butner Public Safety Patch Since 1947, Butner Public Safety has been protecting the citizens, businesses and hospitals in this unique community.

Located in both Durham and Granville counties, the 36-square mile area know as Butner was the nation's last state-owned town. The community, which includes numerous local, state and federal institutions, was run by the North Carolina state government until July 2007 when it was incorporated. The former military training camp is home to more than 7,500 residents.

Butner Public Safety is a division of the NC Dept. of Crime Control and Public Safety, CCPS.  The Town of Butner contracts with CCPS to have Butner Public Safety provide fire and police services to the incorporated area known as the Town of Butner.

Butner Public Safety provides the sole police and fire protection for the town, its citizens, businesses and institutions. Butner Public Safety is given the authority and jurisdiction by GS 122C-408.

Public Safety Officers have more responsibility and a wider range of duties than most law enforcement since each officer must be certified in law enforcement and be trained in firefighting.

Butner Public Safety Officers also must have extensive knowledge of the policies, procedures, jurisdictional authority and special populations of the different government institutions in town.

Commanded by Chief Wayne Hobgood, the agency has 49 sworn officers, five telecommunicators and one office assistant who provide the citizens of the town, as well as the patients, inmates and school students receiving treatment within the state and federal institutions with fire, police, and telecommuications services. The telecommunicators provide emergency communications for Butner, as well as provide a back up center for Granville County 911 communications.
